Virginia Jones Monger

Virginia Jones Monger, 93, of Lenoir City, passed Saturday, Sept. 4.

Born Sept. 16, 1927, in Bessemer, Ala., she moved to Lenoir City in the seventh grade with the building of Fort Loudoun Dam where her father was a machinist with TVA. Virginia was a 1946 graduate of Lenoir City High School. She met Curtis Monger who had returned to Lenoir City after World War II and they were married in 1947. While Curtis attended UT on the GI Bill, Virginia worked at Dempster Brothers in Knoxville. After moving back to Lenoir City, Virginia worked as a kindergarten teacher in the late 1960s and 1970s at Central United Methodist Church. Soon after the unexpected death of Curtis in 1977, she worked for the Loudon County Purchasing Department until her retirement in 1990.

Virginia was an active member of the United Methodist Women at Central, where she was a longtime member. She loved yard work, growing flowers, family and many friends. Virginia had a good sense of humor and the ability to make people feel welcome and important.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Monger; parents, Fred S. and Vera Webster Jones; and brothers, Fred W. and Robert H. "Bob" Jones.

She is survived by her daughter, Joan Monger Eiffe and husband, Mike; son, Hugh Curtis Monger and wife, Sue Ann Houk Monger; grandsons, Charles “Chas” Allen and wife, Barbie, and Sam H. Monger and wife, Marcela; granddaughters, Jennifer Eiffe, Virginia “Ginny” Monger Woods and husband, Davis; great-grandsons, Brian, Brody and Brooks Allen and Reed Woods.

The family would like to express gratitude to several caregivers with Visiting Angels, especially Ashley Grimes and Becky Whitlock, and neighbors Teresa Laughlin and Joan Fred.

The family will receive friends 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Central United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Audrey Madigan officiating. Interment will follow at the Lakeview Cemetery.
