Shirley Johnson Thomas, 86, of Lenoir City, passed away Monday, April 12, 2021.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women. Shirley was a lifelong teacher, teaching several generations of students. She started her teaching career at Eaton Elementary School. She put her teaching career on pause to raise her family, but still was a substitute in Lenoir City Schools, where she was beloved for reading aloud to her students. Shirley later taught special education at Lenoir City Middle School for 21 years with her dear friend, Lisa Caldwell.
Shirley’s greatest joy was her family. She and her husband, Sol Thomas, were happily married for over 65 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Michael Thomas and Mark Thomas; daughter-in-law, Monica Thomas; grandson, Zach Thomas; brother, Ed Perry; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Bradley; and brother-in-law, Skip Bradley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marie Johnson Perry and Thomas Johnson; stepfather, Fisher Perry; grandson, Jake Thomas; and sister-in-law, Patricia Perry.
Her family would like to express their deep appreciation to the Covenant Hospice Team and especially to Shirley’s caregiver, Tracie Carmack. Friends may come 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, April 15, to the funeral home to pay their respects. Family and friends will gather at 11 a.m. Friday at Lakeview Cemetery in Lenoir City for graveside services with the Rev. Kristie Banes officiating.
