Primient, formerly Tate & Lyle in Loudon, is saving resources and drastically reducing its carbon footprint through an aggressive investment in energy savings.
Primient recently announced achievement of an Energy Star Certification for 2022, which is the sixth year by the plant. The Environmental Protection Agency awards the certification to businesses that meet strict standards for energy savings and consumption.
“We’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished,” Jim Lang, technical manager at Primient, said.
Lang said earning the award requires making improvements in energy usage.
The Loudon plant and another Primient plant in Lafayette, Ind., are the only facilities in the corn wet milling industry to currently hold the Energy Star certification for six years or more.
“We’re incredibly proud to receive Energy Star certification year on year,” Justin Plummer, technical manager at Primient, said.
Plummer said the company has worked to improve efficiencies.
“Continued investment in our facilities, a future-focused sustainability strategy and a dedication to people who support each facility and project are keys to our ongoing success,” Plummer said.
Lang said the company started the switch from coal boilers to natural gas turbines in 2016. Primient facilities have implemented combined heat and power systems transitioning from coal-fired boilers. The Loudon system has reduced the site’s CO2 emissions by over 40% along with a more than 70% reduction in site SO2 emissions.
The reduction in carbon and sulfur have contributed to making the air in Loudon cleaner while saving energy by using the heat as a byproduct to boil water, he said.
“We’re always looking for ways to save energy and reduce emissions,” Lang said. “In the future, we will be working on projects that will save energy and water.”
Cindy Jacobs, chief of the EPA’s Energy Star commercial and industrial branch, said improving the efficiency of the nation’s buildings is critical to protecting the environment.
“From the boiler room to the board room, organizations are leading the way by making their operations more efficient and earning EPA’s Energy Star certification,” she said.
