The Tellico Village Tarpons swam their second meet of the 2012 season Saturday at the Newport Community against the Newport/Cocke County Rapids.
Despite dropping the meet by a score of 318-305, the Tarpons put in a strong performance in the pool.
"It wasn't the fault of our swimmer," team manager Agnes Beauchamp said of the loss. "Just about all the events we had kids in we won them."
The team came away with 33 first place finishes and 27 second place finishes while also setting a number of team records.
Rachel Scheffer had quite a day, setting Tarpons records in the 9-10 years old 25-yard freestyle, 25-yard back stroke, 25-yard butterfly and 100-yard individual medley.
Logan Wright had a big day as well, setting team records in the 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard back stroke, 50-yard butterfly and 100-yard individual medley for girls 11-12 years old.
Madison Wright, Seth Gates, Dylan Petiprin, Rachel Wrenn and Courtney Pethers also set team records during the meet.
Team records were not the only ones dropping for the Tarpons Saturday as 35 swimmers set personal bests at the meet.
However, the number of strong performances would not be enough for a Tarpons team that did not compete with the numbers of their opponent.
"We had never, ever since we've been involved with this team, seen such an effort or a coming together of this group of kids like we did last Saturday," Beauchamp said. "It was just phenomenal. It was a great meet."
The Tarpons next meet will be their biggest of the season so far as they head to Alcoa for the Smoky Mountain Invitation Meet, which stretches over two days.
July 7 will feature swimmers 11 years old and older competing, while 10-year-old swimmers and younger will compete Sunday, July 8.
There will be 42 swimmers for the Tarpons competing in 107 individual events and 13 relay races.
This will be the first team for the meet this summer where they will compete against more than one team. It is the largest outdoor swim meet in the United States.
The Tarpons finished 16 our of 27 teams at the meet in 2011, finishing second in their league. They finished first in their league in 2010 with an overall 18th place finish out of 19 total teams.
It will be the last meet before the Tarpons home meet, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. July 12 at the Tellico Village Wellness Center when they will compete against the Arnstein Jewish Community Center.
